Case 1:In a tire bead wire production workshop with lots of dust, don’t use laser diffraction principle gauge
Case 2:For measuring ultra-high precision fine wires, don’t use laser scanning principle gauge;
Case 3:If you need to measure wire diameters below 0.01mm, don’t use telecentric optical principle gauge
Case 4:If line speed is high and defects measurements is required, don’t use laser scanning gauge

With 15 years of experience in the field application,we listed both advantages and disadvantages of the laser diameter gauges which are popular on market,so you can choose the best devices according to your production environment, precision requirements, and working conditions.

1. Laser Diffraction Principle Gauge
Advantages: No moving parts inside, the highest precision solution among diameter gauges, high-speed exposure, excellent vibration resistance, can measure wire diameters as fine as 0.005mm with an accuracy of ±0.01µm. Particularly suitable for high-precision fine wire applications.
Disadvantages: Sensitive to dust and smoke, not recommended for poor environmental conditions as well as transparent material measurement

2. Laser Scanning Principle Gauge
Features: Wide measurement range with a single device, average precision, moderate environmental adaptability,strong expandability, can measure both flat and round wires as well as all transparent materials.It is capable of defects measurement at low wire speeds.
Disadvantages: Contains moving parts, low measurement frequency, cannot achieve very high frequencies, poor vibration resistance.

3. Telecentric Optical Measurement Principle Gauge
Features: No moving parts, extremely strong environmental adaptability, dust and smoke do not affect the measurement, measurement frequency can be very high, capable of defects, and diameter measurement.It is applicable to both flat and round wires measurement as well as transparent materials.

Disadvantages: —Compare to laser fresnel diffraction principle gauges, vibration resistance is relatively lower but better than motor scanning principle gauges.

4. Laser Fresnel Diffraction Principle Gauge
Features: No moving parts, high-speed exposure, strong vibration resistance, high precision, measurement frequency can be very high, capable of defects measurement.
Disadvantages: Weak environmental adaptability, cannot be used for single-axis diameter measurement, cannot measure fine wire diameters, unable to measure some transparent material pipes as well as flat wire measurement.
